Highlight Tape: College Recruiting for Kickers & Punters
As the season moves along, you kicked a few field goals, bombed
few into the end zone, maybe had a few good punts. You finally got some of the
video from your school or someone took some pictures or video and gave them to
you. Now what….

If you are a junior or senior in high school or a senior in
college –its time to produce your own video! We normally recommend making a video less than 5 minutes,
preferably in the three to five minutes area. Here are some tips to help you produce a butt-kicking
highlight tape for college and pro scouts.
1) Best
kicks must go first. As they say, first impressions are key to success. It’s
the same here; you want to catch their attention in the first 30 seconds. In
college (DI), they get over a couple hundred videos of kickers yearly - you
need to stand out! A good news
segment highlighting your kicks, or simply your longest kickoffs and field
goals. I personally remember a
student of mind getting picked up by a Pac-10 school because he had 15-20
kickoffs all close or over 4.00 seconds in hang time into the end zone as the
first segment of his video.
2) Keep
it short – When editing, don’t have 30 seconds between kicks. The video should
flow fairly quickly and they should not be more than a few seconds apart
3) Make
sure to add all you contact information in the beginning and in the end of the
video. The last thing a coach
needs is to go a hunt for your contact information. Put your name and high school at the bottom of the screen
all the way thru the video. But
that’s just me, if a coach has limited time and has been watching hundreds of
video, making sure he remembers who is watching can only help.
4) If
all else fails, get a professional.
At TKS we recommend Sports Force Online, Sports Force (www.sportsforceonline.com) they
will even come to your game and record you kicking. Then you are guaranteed solid footage that you can use right
away and able to see vividly. I have seen some bad footage from high school cameras
and its tough to see the ball traveling under the Friday or Saturday night-lights.
5) YouTube
– Once you get your DVD done, place it on the World Wide Web and YouTube. Then you can send it in an email to
scouts and coaches, who needs snail mail!
Here are good examples of videos that have worked over the
last few years.
